Colorism in America NOW

Colorism Definition: Discrimination, based on skin color, also known as colorism or shadeism, is a form of prejudice or discrimination in which people are treated differently based on the social meaning attached to skin color.                                                                                          My Thoughts      So many of our young black girls are negatively affected by society's views of them that many of them suffer in silence and have to deal with depression alone.  According to the Washington Post suicide rates for black children are now twice that of white children, a new study shows.  IT'S TIME TO SAY STOP enough is enough.      I'm covering this topic because today I felt my heart break into a million pieces after hearing my daughter's story. Let me start from the beginning. I was just getting home and my daughter comes to me and says Mom we need to talk. I'm concerned now, so I say about what sweetheart. With a saddened look i

FOOTPRINTS (Learning Life's Lessons)

Footprints, Footprints Where are we going and where are we headed We've been to the moon and back together We've seen good times and bad times and so much, much more Oh, if only my footprints could leave a trail behind of all the places that I've been to so far and let's not forget all the places that I have yet to go. I've climbed mountains and sailed across seas I've experienced things that would bring most to their knees But when I look back over the trail of footprints left in my heart I realized that every single step has played a part in wisdom, in knowledge, and in learning forgiveness. In life even as a child you're always applauded when you take that first step And before you know it You've taken your biggest step as you've grown and matured and you walked across that stage that stage called life For you've got plans of greatness ahead if only in your life you just continue to take that next step There

Fathers Play Such an Important Role

I want to first start off by saying that I salute all of the moms that are raising young boys to one day become great men. The task is not easy but with a lot of love and support it can be done. I am a single mom of two little girls and I remember this past year watching the video of a shooting of a young African-American boy by the name of Tamir Rice. His story touched my heart so much that I decided to get a males perspective on how to raise a young man in our society today. So I decided to email Mr. Dennis Spurling, a successful personal - injury lawyer in Houston, who is also raising two wonderful young boys. I asked him if he would shed some insight about how to raise a well- rounded young man even when no father is present.  I knew his time was valuable so I decided to ask him my top three questions. Hopefully his answers will be very helpful to those of you that are raising young men to one day become our future leaders. The question and answer session is located down belo

Reflections:

I remember about a year ago when my baby took all of her savings and gave it to Jump Rope For Heart. I asked her why, she said I just wanted to save lives. And at a parade a little girl was crying and Olivia gave her some of her beads. I asked her why and she said, It's better to give than to receive. Man looks on the outside but God looks on the heart. Is your heart in the right place? Beauty fades but a loving heart last always. Trying to instill the right values is not always easy but it can be done.
